Captured in early September in the heart of the Icelandic Highlands, this aerial scene reveals one of the region’s most striking natural illusions. Bright yellow moss, illuminated by the low autumn sun, spreads across the black volcanic desert in branching patterns that resemble glowing roots or the silhouettes of trees drawn in gold.

From above, these organic shapes become abstract and painterly. The light catches the moss just enough to carve it out from the dark earth, creating a surreal contrast where nature imitates art. A pale glacial stream cuts through the lower part of the image, grounding the composition in the raw geography of the Highlands.

This photograph celebrates the Highlands at their seasonal peak: when summer’s vivid greens shift toward warmer tones, and the land glows with a soft, golden fire.
