Captured above the Skaftá River at the moment where its waters begin their journey from the glacier, this photograph reveals a striking volcanic formation surrounded by braided channels of glacial meltwater. The contrast between the deep black sands, vivid green moss, and pale blue lakes gives the landscape an almost surreal presence.
At the center of the scene, a small aircraft crosses above the crater, introducing a sense of scale within an otherwise vast and remote environment. This fleeting moment required careful planning and coordination, aligning both the position of the aircraft and the light to capture the landscape in its full complexity.
From above, the formation appears almost isolated an island of life and colour within a constantly shifting network of water and sediment. It is a place where movement begins, where glacial water starts to carve its path across Iceland, shaping the land long before it reaches the ocean.
